An online-store-exclusive set: Bifan ceremonial grade matcha paired with a purple bamboo shin chasen handmade by Kubo Sabun, a craftsman at Chikumeido in Takayama, Nara.
Set includes
- Bifan Ceremonial Grade Matcha 30g ×1: from Kirishima, Kagoshima, Japan; shade-grown first-flush tea, stone-ground. Best whisked and enjoyed on its own; one tin makes about 15 bowls of usucha.
- Chikumeido Takayama Chasen, Purple Bamboo Shin Chasen by Kubo Sabun ×1: a traditional craft made in Takayama, Nara, Japan; purple bamboo, about 64 prongs; the practice version of the Omotesenke susudake shin chasen, strong and durable.
How to make usucha (thin tea)
Matcha 2g / hot water 60ml / 80°C. Sift the matcha into a bowl, add the hot water, and whisk briskly back and forth with the chasen for about 15 seconds until a fine, even foam forms.
Chasen care tips
- Before use, soak the chasen in warm water for 1–2 minutes; softened prongs are less likely to break.
- After use, simply rinse with clean water – no detergent.
- Shake off the water and let it air-dry in a well-ventilated spot to prevent mold.
